Cute isn't he?Dave Meredith is Melodrift's featured artist for January 2004. He is a computer musician of a large variety of gentres and styles, favouring mostly hip hop and breakbeat, and has also, astonishingly, produced over a hundred songs to date. We grabbed hold of Dave for an interview recently to ask him to give us his thoughts on various musical related subjects and also his thoughts on 'life', and we also learned that he might be ready to settle down!! (Queue up nicely girls!)

Feast your eyes on Dave's interview and then feast your ears on his music!

The Interview

1. Name?

Dave Meredith

2. Age?

29

3. Location?

England

4. Music Genre?

Various

5. How long have you been making music?

I have been messing with music since a young age, but as a more serious producer its been about two to three years.

6. What's your favourite piece of gear/equipment?

My Technics SXKN7000 and My PC (had to pick two sorry).

7. What's the first record you ever bought?

It was an album, REM Automatic For The People.

8. What's the worst and best song or band you ever heard?

Worst Band: I hated groups like the Spice Girls and Manufactured Pop groups. Mature pop is fine though. Best Band: I don't really have a best band. I do like a few bands in the Indie Rock genre and of course I love Hiphop.

9. If you were suddenly the most influential person in the music industry, what would you change about it?

Good Question, very good question. I would get rid of the manufactured pop music and try to bring out some of the awesome talent thats unsigned. Too much is based on image these days.

10. What's your philosophy on life?

To take each day as it comes, and see what it brings.

11. What irritates you the most?

Being interrupted whilst making music and people that look down on you because they have plenty of money.

12. What's your most treasured possession?

My Music and my footy medals. Things that I have reached some goals working hard at.

13. What would you like to achieve in 2004?

In life? Maybe settle down? (coughs)..... In music, just keep going, maybe get noticed and have some mild success, that would be cool. Keep delivering the music and collabs.

14. Where would you most like to visit and why?

Anywhere thats warmer than the UK. Maybe Spain, Japan, Usa. Japan for its different culture and style.

15. What's your biggest fear?

Heights and flying.

16. What do you most or least like about where you live?

Its pretty quiet where I live, nice jogging spots and loads of local footy teams to play for. I don't like too many snobby people, it's to expensive to buy a house and there are too many pubs (twenty or so in a square mile) yep alot of boozers here, hahaha.

17. Who do you admire and why?

I have in the past admired Eric Cantona the football player for his awesome skills and style. He had that ability to change a soccer match with his skills and quick mind. In music, 2pac, for being the best Hiphop artist ever.

18. What's the worst or funniest experience you've had while producing a tune?

Oh man. It was last year. I was half way through a new song and was really happy with it too. Everything was falling into place when I decided to go down stairs and get a piece of toast. I forgot to shut my bedroom door and when I came back up my cat was asleep on the PC keyboard and had deleted all my work!! Eight hours or more wasted. Even the back up files had gone. I don't know what keys he hit but the lot was gone.

The track was so good too and yet it will never be heard again. I just had to count to ten and let him out of the room in a gentle manner (honest). It doesn't sound like much but it kills you inside when that happens!

19. What would you like to be remembered for?

Ermm, I would love to be remembered for music in some way (even if it was one song)....... nah I know, a PIMP!! hehe (joking)!

20. What advice would you give newcomers to the music industry?

Don't ever give up! If you really feel that you have music in you then keep going. You will move up through the equipment and set-ups as you improve as an artist. Listen to people who give you good helpful advice, and if you don't agree with a persons thoughts dont revert to a slanging match, just take it and leave it.

At the end of the day you know your style and what you're best at. If you're having fun (fun being a key word) then you will get better and better. There are a lot of people out there who will help you and make your time in music a much better one. You have to enjoy it and have fun. If the heart and soul is not in it then why do it?

Thanks Dave for that fabulous insight into your thoughts! If you haven't gotten enough of Dave yet, pop over to Dave's instrumentals page or his collabs page on soundclick and listen to a few of his great beats!
