Distance becomes an instrument in its own right on Blank Slate, Open Space, the new collaborative album from Toronto ambient composer Alaskan Tapes and Portland-based musician Blu Miles. The seven-track release arrives alongside lead single In-Cloud (feat. Ann Annie), presenting an immersive collection that transforms long-distance collaboration into something remarkably intimate. Rather than emphasising technical precision, the record thrives on instinct, restraint, and the quiet conversations unfolding between its carefully layered performances.

Recorded through an extended exchange of musical ideas before being completed together in Toronto, the album blurs the distinction between remote creation and in-person collaboration. Piano, saxophone, guitar, clarinet, and subtle electronic textures intertwine with such natural ease that it becomes impossible to identify where one artist ends and the other begins. The result is a fluid listening experience that values atmosphere over structure while maintaining a strong emotional centre throughout.

The project's lead offering, In-Cloud, introduces the album's delicate sonic language with the addition of Ann Annie's expressive multi-instrumental contributions. Floating melodies emerge from evolving piano motifs as guitars dissolve into expansive textures and woodwinds pulse gently beneath the surface. The composition feels both organic and contemporary, creating an environment that encourages reflection rather than demanding attention.

With Blank Slate, Open Space, Alaskan Tapes and Blu Miles have crafted a record that celebrates presence, vulnerability, and the power of patient collaboration. Every composition unfolds like a shared memory, inviting listeners into an unhurried world where silence carries as much meaning as sound. It is a thoughtful addition to the modern ambient landscape and a release that reinforces both artists' distinctive approaches to creating deeply transportive music.
