Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, Austyn Gillette recently released his newest EP, Moments (2026). The skateboarder known for being a multi-instrumentalist released a five-track EP, showcasing his blend of alternative and indie sounds and influences which embeds his reputation in contemporary music of today.
On the new EP, Gillette creates the sound of comfortability as he blends introspective lyricism, soft melodies, and layered arrangements. Moments captures, well, Gillette’s best musical moments in my opinion; his distinct artistic sound is approachable yet thoughtful and sonic in experience, characterized by his riffs, synthesizers, and his unforgettable vocal style.
The EP is inspired by Gillette’s travels across Europe, exploring themes of change, self-awareness, fulfillment, and love. There is a sense of quiet reflection, focusing on everyday feelings rather than dramatic storytelling which makes Moments so personal yet allows a listener to relate. The opening track, ‘Is It Enough’, sets this emotional tone for the EP. It feels like an internal conversation, going round and round in self-doubt and the idea of not living up to your own expectations. Although the track has this heavy themes, Gillette’s vocal delivery does not oversell the emotion, but rather sounds almost reflective and calm. This notion and lyrics such as: “ask yourself “is it enough, would you do it again?””, makes the song hit harder. There are layers to this tune, and it is the kind of opener that pulls you in without demanding any attention.
A hallmark of Gillette’s production is that he saves a space for a pause or a breath. Rather than filling every second of these tracks with sound, he makes room for the instruments to breathe which is what makes his work so compelling. With reverb on the instruments like acoustic guitars, softer strums of electric guitars, and keyboards, Gillette creates an environment that allows a listener to take a step back and let go of their consciousness. Alongside the pauses, it further allows for thought to flow through, perhaps unlocking a new meaning to the tracks.
Moments succeeds as it does not try to be anything other than itself. Across the five-tracks on the EP, Austyn Gillette can embrace patience and vulnerability whilst allowing smaller details of the track to carry the weight of the song. The warmth of the production style and his distinctive voice create an atmosphere that naturally brings the listener in. Like much of Gillette’s work, Moments captures growth and uncertainty, a personal experience that is widely relatable. The listener can find comfort in the simplicity of his music in the messiness of life.
