With “Chaos Is Me,” Chicago-based, Chinese-born artist Cassandra Liu makes a striking entrance, announcing both her debut single and the tonal direction of her forthcoming album Madison Boulevard. Written, produced, and recorded entirely by Liu, the track transforms a private exchange with a friend into something far larger and more philosophical: the idea that chaos is not an external force to be resisted, but an internal state to be inhabited. From the outset, it positions Liu as an artist thinking in systems rather than singles, building a conceptual world as much as a song.
Sonically, “Chaos Is Me” sits in a dark synth-pop space, but refuses to stay still within it. Built on a dense electronic foundation with atmospheric textures and striking vocal presence, it expands and contracts like a living organism. The influence of classical Chinese philosophy—particularly the fluid identity questioning of the Butterfly Dream attributed to Zhuangzi—runs through its structure, turning existential uncertainty into something almost physical and club-ready. As noted by Lost in the Manor, the track “develops into a fierce and magnificent soundscape,” with vocals that “add dynamism and elevate the song’s appeal to soaring heights,” a description that feels earned as the song builds toward its most immersive moments.
The accompanying music video, directed by NYU graduate Matan Hamam, extends the track’s conceptual reach into abstract visual language, blending choreography, costume, and fragmented performance into a meditation on identity and scale. Liu herself frames the work with a stark clarity: “We are so insignificant compared to how grand the universe is, but we are everything to our cells, molecules, thoughts that make up who we are.” As a debut statement, “Chaos Is Me” is ambitious without feeling overreached, presenting Liu as an artist intent on fusing philosophy, production control, and emotional intensity into a unified aesthetic vision.
