With their debut, Hamburg’s counterglow present an alt-pop project steeped in introspection and dreamy textures. echoes of self is a careful blend of indie-soul, modern psychedelia, and ethereal synthscapes, and while it’s ambitious in scope, it remains deeply personal. Lauren Goodley’s vocals, soft and breathy, hover over Jonas Grell’s meticulously crafted production, creating a sense of intimacy that persists throughout the album.

What makes this record compelling is its balance of experimentation and accessibility. “Soon” and “control” lean into playful grooves, while “grow” preserves the rawness of its demo recording, offering a moment of vulnerability rarely captured with such honesty. There’s a tension between polish and imperfection that keeps the listener engaged.

Thematically, echoes of self is concerned with the internal landscapes of early adulthood: self-doubt, anxiety, love, and growth. The album’s title is fitting, as the songs often feel like echoes of private thoughts, refracted through synth textures and jazzy rhythms. It’s a record meant to be felt as much as heard.

While not every track fully lands with the same impact, the album succeeds in establishing counterglow’s unique voice in a crowded alt-pop landscape. echoes of self is a thoughtful, immersive debut that hints at greater ambition in future projects.
