Spanish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Denis Granan returns with a compelling new single, Surrender, out this week. This atmospheric track is a mesmerizing exploration of vulnerability, tension, and surreal liberation, capturing a moment where raw emotion intertwines seamlessly with the intricacies of electronic sound design.
Co-produced alongside Ed Is Dead, Surrender is a track that shines with its delicate vocals and rich electronic soundscape. The song’s journey began at a songwriting camp that Granan himself organized through his label, Fluctua Records—an effort that reflects his commitment to the collaborative process at the core of his musical identity. In a world where music often feels isolated, Surrender stands as a testament to the power of creative minds coming together to shape something meaningful and dynamic.
What makes Surrender so captivating is how it strikes a delicate balance between tension and release, a process that Granan describes as “minimalist expansiveness.” The track glides between haunting, intimate vocals and immersive sound textures, pulling listeners into a space where the act of surrender feels both liberating and melancholic. In the way that Granan speaks of his creative journey, there is a palpable sense of emotional depth. He shares, “I had a few songs in mind that were meant for me. At the time, I was heavily influenced by James Blake—especially Limit to Your Love. I started playing around with that kind of vibe, and by the end of the day, together with Daria Kickler and Sami Van Hasselt, we had the first version of Surrender.”
In its early form, Surrender was much more acoustic, with few electronic elements, but it was the collaboration with Ed Is Dead in 2024 that truly brought the track to life. As Granan recalls, “I knew I wanted to work with him, so I showed him the track, and he immediately connected with it. He pushed it much further than I had imagined. He introduced these beautiful, classy trip-hop drum beats, which I think became the climax of the track.” The result is a unique fusion of organic rhythms and intricate production, with the driving trip-hop beats enhancing the song’s emotional arc. The evolution from an acoustic demo to a polished final product was a long and intricate process, but the result is a track that encapsulates the raw emotion of its creators.
For Granan, Surrender isn’t just a song—it’s a journey. He speaks of how each step in the song’s creation brought it closer to the sound he had envisioned. This is evident not only in the track itself but in the stunning visuals by Silvia Coca and Alex Arteaga, which complement the song's atmosphere beautifully, adding another layer of depth to the experience. These visuals, like the music, invite the listener into a world of introspection and raw emotion.
Granan’s music has always been about exploring the boundaries between organic emotion and electronic textures, and Surrender exemplifies this in ways that feel both fresh and familiar. Drawing from a diverse range of influences, including the ethereal intensity of Thom Yorke, the refined pulse of Sohn, and the soulful vulnerability of James Blake, Granan blends these elements into something entirely his own.
As a multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of Fluctua Records, Granan’s commitment to creating music that is both intimate and expansive has been at the heart of his work. His sound has continued to evolve since the launch of his solo project in 2021, leading up to the release of his highly anticipated debut album. In Surrender, Granan not only continues to refine his artistic voice but also sets the stage for what promises to be a stunning collection of music, brimming with haunting melodies and introspective lyrics.
Denis Granan’s Surrender is more than just a song—it’s a sonic journey through the space between tension and release, vulnerability and strength. With his haunting vocals, meticulous production, and commitment to collaboration, Granan has once again crafted a track that resonates on both an emotional and sonic level, inviting listeners to surrender themselves to the music.
