If, Background Music for Family Arguments, were a cocktail, it would be a mix of post-punk’s punch, jazz-funk’s sass, and indie-dance’s sparkle, served with a twist of no-wave unpredictability. Drug Store Raid’s debut album is a bold 35-minute rollercoaster that celebrates individuality while flipping a cheeky middle finger to conformity. From the opening notes, the band makes it clear they’re not here to blend in—they’re here to stand out and make you feel something, anything, as long as it’s real.

The album thrives on its unpredictability, with each track offering something wildly different from the last. ‘I Wanna Be a Hipster’ hilariously skewers pretentious subcultures with lyrics so sharp they could cut through a thrifted tweed blazer, while ‘Suzy’ is a dreamy escape into wavey, surreal soundscapes. Meanwhile, ‘Fashion Fashion’ takes absurdity to new heights with a heist story involving H&M and a banana. It’s ridiculous, sure, but it works, because the band commits so wholeheartedly to their anything-goes ethos.

One of the album’s standout moments is the track ‘Gutter.’ It’s raw, aggressive, and dripping with nihilism—a sonic punch to the face that’s equal parts thrilling and terrifying. When they declare, “This is death! End is here, so you gotta get away!” it feels like a primal scream for anyone who’s ever felt trapped by modern life. Yet even amid the chaos, there’s a sense of fun, as if the band is winking at you from the eye of the storm.

What ties it all together is the band’s infectious energy and dynamic range. Every member of Drug Store Raid plays like their life depends on it, and you can hear the hunger in every note. Their ability to blend genres so seamlessly is impressive, but what’s even more remarkable is their commitment to telling stories that are as humorous as they are heartfelt.

Background Music for Family Arguments, is more than just an album—it’s an experience. It’s a love letter to misfits, an anthem for the restless, and a reminder that sometimes, the best way to deal with life’s absurdities is to turn the volume up and dance through the madness.
