Edinburgh Fringe Strikes a Chord with Andy Macleod's 'Soho Days, Camden Nights'

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe welcomes the worldwide premiere of Andy Macleod: Soho Days, Camden Nights – A Failed Rockstar's Guide To Success, a heartfelt spoken word production that blends music history, personal memoir and comedy into one compelling performance. Running at Just The Tonic – Mash House – Cask Room from 6–17 August at 2.25pm, the show arrives alongside the publication of Macleod's latest book through Omnibus Press, offering audiences an intimate journey through Britain's vibrant 1990s indie music scene.
Directed by BAFTA-winning actor Jason Watkins, the production revisits a pivotal moment in Macleod's life when, despite abandoned dreams of rock stardom, he found renewed purpose promoting bands across Camden's legendary live music circuit. Set against the backdrop of Britpop's golden era, the story explores the excitement, disappointments and unexpected opportunities that shaped one music fan's determination to remain part of the industry he loved. Watkins' involvement adds considerable theatrical weight to a production already attracting significant attention.
Far from simply recounting nostalgic memories, Soho Days, Camden Nights examines the realities of ambition within the music business. As Macleod balances an uninspiring office job with late-night gigs and the hope of managing an exciting Norwegian band, audiences are invited to reflect on the unpredictable nature of success. The show asks whether talent alone is enough or whether timing, persistence and luck ultimately decide who reaches the top.
Macleod's own career lends authenticity to every story. Today he works as a respected London music promoter who has helped stage performances by artists including Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, The Killers, Keane and Fontaines D.C., while also fronting The Cure tribute band The InCureables. Before that, however, he experienced the highs and lows of chasing musical success himself, including being managed by a then little-known Ricky Gervais during his own band's early years.
With glowing praise already coming from critics including The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, Steve Lamacq and Al Murray, the Edinburgh premiere looks set to resonate with anyone who has ever pursued an impossible dream. Funny, reflective and full of affection for Britain's independent music scene, Soho Days, Camden Nights promises to be one of this year's standout spoken word performances at the Fringe.
