Amelie Farren charts a nocturnal course with Ocean Sounds, the lead single from her debut album Airheaded, arriving like a whispered confession in the quiet hours. The Brisbane-based singer-songwriter blends alt-folk intimacy with a modern alt-pop sensibility, crafting a track that is both carefully sculpted and emotionally raw. Gentle acoustic pulses and atmospheric accents frame Farren’s intimate vocals, creating a cinematic, subtly melancholic soundscape that invites introspection. More than just a single, Ocean Sounds lays the emotional and thematic foundation for Airheaded, revealing Farren’s quiet bravery in embracing vulnerability over grand gestures and setting the tone for a debut that is immersive, moody, and deeply personal.

Welcome to MeloDrift. Can you tell us a little bit about your musical background?

I started writing songs a little after I turned 12. I think I would’ve been writing earlier had I realized it was an option, but for some reason it didn’t occur to me that I could create my own music. Before that point I’d been in choir, which I definitely credit a lot of my early experience to.

If your life had a theme song, what would it be?

At the moment, maybe When I’m Small by Phantogram? I play it on loop when I walk, I’ve started associating the song with being outside.

Who or what have been the most impactful influences on your musical style and sound?

I grew up listening to classic rock bands like the Eagles and Nirvana, so though we’re in wildly different genres I’d still say they greatly impacted my early style influence. Older country artists like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson also hugely influenced how I approach songwriting.

How do your life experiences shape your songwriting, and what emotions or ideas do you hope listeners connect with in your music?

My lyrics stem from my own experiences and the people I talk to, as well as the environment I grew up in and all the places I’ve visited. Honestly, I’m shaped by so many things it’s impossible to pin down anything specific. Everyone writes songs and relates to them differently, and that’s all I’ve ever hoped for those who listen to my music.

Is there a song of yours that holds particular personal significance? We’d love to know more about the story or the inspiration behind it.

Contemplation Song. Not necessarily because of the lyrics or the meaning behind them but because the song was in an editing phase for so long. I started writing it when I was 14 and it wasn’t complete until a few weeks before the launch of Airheaded, I’m incredibly attached to it and I don’t think any other song I could possibly write will make me feel the same way.

If you could swap lives with any musician for a day, who would it be and what would you do?

Like nothing I’ve ever done before! These are the first shows where I wasn’t dealing with insane levels of stage fright, so I was actually able to enjoy myself. So hyped for what’s next

What’s a guilty pleasure song you secretly love but might surprise your fans?

Daddy DJ by Crazy Frog. I will not elaborate.

Looking ahead, what are some goals or dreams you have for your music and career?

Playing to a crowd that knows my lyrics better than I do is such a surreal experience. During my UK tour it was all I could do not to cry midway through my shows, I’m so grateful for everyone who was able to come support me.

Finally, is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers before we close?

I’m doing shows in Australia and America next! I’m so excited! Come say hi!
