After the release of 'Rolling Loud', MeloDrift sits down with a musician whose journey began with the raw energy of punk and metal and has since evolved into a deeply personal and eclectic sound. From an early fascination with the drums to finding inspiration in UK rap and 90s alternative rock, Lab Rat's music is a reflection of life’s highs and lows. With an upcoming album on the horizon, they open up about the emotional depth behind their songwriting, the power of hearing fans sing their lyrics back, and the simple yet profound message in their final track, 'You Are Not Alone'. As they prepare to share their work with the world, one thing is clear—this is music meant to connect, uplift, and remind listeners of the beauty in life, even in its darkest moments.
Welcome to MeloDrift. Can you tell us a little bit about your musical background?
When I was eight years old, my old man took me to a bandidos clubhouse where my uncle was playing drums in the house band. I remember seeing how cool he looked and asked my dad for a drum kit for my next birthday. Started playing in punk, grunge and metal bands at about 13 which led to me learning other instruments and various styles of music.
If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
Curb Your Enthusiasm Theme Song.
Who or what have been the most impactful influences on your musical style and sound?
UK rap and alternative 90's guitar-based music.
How do your life experiences shape your songwriting, and what emotions or ideas do you hope listeners connect with in your music?
My life experience is what my songs are about. The idea that I can potentially be there for someone the same way music has been there for me I needed it.
Each phase of music-making—writing, recording, rehearsing, and performing—has its own unique rewards. Could you share a memorable moment from each stage?
I don't want to say too much but I will say that hearing your own lyrics sung back at you on stage is one of the greatest feelings I've ever felt.
Is there a song of yours that holds particular personal significance? We’d love to know more about the story or the inspiration behind it.
You are not Alone. The final track of the upcoming album. It's a song about how, as cliche as it might sound, life truly is beautiful, it's a blessing we get to be here & in the moments that you are unable to see it because everything seems so bleak just remember you are not alone.
If you could swap lives with any musician for a day, who would it be and what would you do?
Per Yngve "Pelle" Ohlin.
What’s a guilty pleasure song you secretly love but might surprise your fans?
A whiter shade of pale.
Looking ahead, what are some goals or dreams you have for your music and career?
I want the music heard by anyone who will listen.
Finally, is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers before we close?
I'm dropping a new album in a few months. Can't wait for you all to hear it.
