Michelle Shocked Turns Four Decades of Music Into a Live Memoir at Edinburgh Fringe 2026

Michelle Shocked will bring four decades of music, touring and storytelling to this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Michelle Shocked’s Bootleg This!, a new solo production combining songs with personal memoir. The Grammy Award-winning American artist will perform for 16 dates at Gilded Balloon Patter House, Downstairs, from 5 to 20 August, with an 8.30pm start each evening.
For Shocked, the Edinburgh engagement represents a significant return to Scotland. These are her only UK performances scheduled for this year and her first Scottish shows since 2018. Currently touring the production in the United States, she arrives in Edinburgh with a format that allows the performance to develop around her music and the stories that have followed her throughout her career.
Shocked first came to wider attention through recordings made during her travels in Texas that eventually reached the UK music scene. What began as an unexpected introduction to the recording industry developed into a major career, with Shocked earning Grammy recognition and releasing a trilogy of acclaimed albums. Her distinctive songwriting has moved between folk, blues, gospel, swing and roots music, establishing a sound that has resisted easy categorisation.
Her career has also been marked by an outspoken commitment to independence. Shocked has spoken extensively about the challenges she has faced as an artist and about her determination to retain control of her music and catalogue. Bootleg This! draws on those experiences, offering audiences an opportunity to hear Shocked reflect on the personal and professional stories behind her songs rather than simply presenting a conventional concert.
The production promises a particularly personal addition to the Fringe programme, with Shocked appearing alone on stage and moving between performance and recollection. Her work has attracted praise from publications including Rolling Stone, The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, and the Edinburgh run offers Scottish audiences a rare chance to see the artist in an intimate setting.
