Heartbreak has always been fertile ground for pop songwriting, but it takes genuine conviction to make familiar emotions feel newly resonant. On her debut EP CHOKE!, Cork artist Gerron largely succeeds by resisting melodrama in favour of emotional precision. Across five concise tracks, she charts the slow dismantling of failed relationships alongside the tentative process of rediscovering herself. It is a compact collection that values clarity over excess, delivering polished pop without sacrificing sincerity.

Lead single "Messy" remains the record's obvious standout. Its punchy electronic production provides an ideal backdrop for lyrics that transform betrayal into catharsis, while Gerron's warm vocal performance keeps the song grounded even as its chorus reaches for widescreen pop appeal. There is a confidence here that extends throughout the EP. Songs such as "Grapefruit" and "To Change a Man" explore more nuanced emotional territory, examining the compromises and disappointments that quietly accumulate before relationships eventually unravel.

Much of the EP's success lies in Gerron's songwriting, which favours observation over grandstanding. She rarely over explains her emotions, trusting listeners to fill in the spaces between carefully chosen lines. That restraint gives the record its authenticity. Rather than presenting empowerment as an uncomplicated victory, she acknowledges the uncertainty that often accompanies personal growth. It is an approach that feels refreshingly mature for a debut release.

Producer Daniel Brazil deserves considerable credit for shaping an understated but effective sonic palette. Shimmering synthesisers, layered vocal arrangements and crisp contemporary production frame Gerron's voice without overwhelming it. The songs move with confidence, balancing commercial accessibility with enough emotional depth to reward repeated listens. At under fifteen minutes, the EP remains focused throughout, avoiding the filler that often weakens debut projects.

There is still room for Gerron to push her songwriting into even more adventurous territory, but CHOKE! provides an impressive foundation. It introduces an artist with a distinctive vocal identity, an instinct for memorable melodies and a welcome commitment to emotional honesty. In an increasingly crowded pop landscape, those qualities alone make Gerron worth paying attention to, and this accomplished debut suggests there is considerably more to come.
